The latest FDA advisory on Paxil warns against prescribing an antidepressant when it’s effective and in a mood-stopping form.
The antidepressant paroxetine (brand name Paxil) is not approved for use in bipolar disorder, depression, or other mood-related conditions.
“Paxil and other antidepressant medications are generally considered safe for long-term use,” the FDA advisory concluded.
It is still unclear how effective Paroxetine is for bipolar disorder, though it has been studied and approved for treating depression, anxiety disorders and premenstrual dysphoric disorder.
The FDA is working on studies to determine whether Paxil works for depression and anxiety disorders, and whether it’s effective for the long-term management of these conditions.
Paxil is also being studied for treating depression.
According to the FDA, “Paxil is generally considered safe for long-term use in the treatment of depression, but it is not FDA approved for this purpose.”
This is the second time the drug has been linked to a potential link to suicide.
The FDA advisory notes that, while Paxil is not considered dangerous, there is some evidence that it can cause suicidal thoughts. (In the case of Paxil, it is not listed as a controlled substance.)
But the FDA has yet to find links between Paxil and suicide.
A study of Paxil found that there were no suicide attempts in the study participants who used it.
However, the study also found that the participants who used the drug had a higher risk of suicidal thoughts than those who didn’t take it.
The FDA warned that the risk of suicidal thoughts for Paxil is “very low” and that its use “may be associated with the following adverse effects:
If you or a loved one is considering taking Paxil for depression, or if you are experiencing other mental health concerns, you or a loved one should talk with their doctor before taking it.
Paxil may not be effective in all forms of depression. But it’s important to remember that it’s not a miracle cure.
In addition to its side effects, Paxil has been shown to cause sleepiness and drowsiness, which can occur with other medicines. You or a loved one should talk with their doctor about other mental health treatments.
If you have been prescribed Paxil and think you may benefit from it, talk with your doctor.
